Mom Goes for a Walk: The Story Behind My Favorite Book
Out of all my books, Mom Goes for a Walk is probably my favorite.
I’ve always been fascinated by how books and films begin. While reading, I try to guess the exact moment when the author thought, “Oh, this could be a novel!” Of course, I can’t know if I’m right, but it’s always fun to turn it around in my mind, to find that one vivid, living scene. Not necessarily where it all started, but it’s nice to think it was. For example, Mom Goes for a Walk obviously started with a walk. It was a long time ago – those happy days with my older daughter when she didn’t have daycare and I didn’t have a smartphone. Our walks seemed endless, and the question of how to keep ourselves entertained was always pressing. The book was born in my head one sunny, windy day at the playground with the ship. You’ll find that illustration in the book. I was lying on the ship, my belly soaking up the sun, while my daughter played below in the sand. And that’s when the thought came to me: “What does a mom do on a walk?” It took about eight years for me to finally draw and publish this book. First, I released it on Amazon (here it is, if you’d like to buy the paperback), and then in Russia as part of a collection of stories about our life in Norway, Hello, It’s Us! For that collection, I wrote a special story called Dad Goes for a Walk, which you can buy here. It was a long road for this book to find its readers, and now I hope it’s finally making its way to you. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll get to live through a little bit of that not-so-easy but oh-so-happy time – those toddler walks with his pet parent. If you prefer paperback, please find it on amazon. And of course you are very welcome to explore my other books here!
